BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAMAJAM

In the year 1889, touched with great pity at the sight of suffering of helpless,, a benevolent institution which goes by the present name of the Chennapuri Annadana Samajam was formed on the 1st july 1890. Mogallur cunniah chetty, the illustrious founder secretary preferred the noble cause 0f service to the poor without remuneration to the material wealth and official status and the samajam was accordingly registered on the 20th january 1893 under Societies act xxi of 1860,provided for the registration of literary, scientific and charitable societies. The well known Philanthrophists of the then Madras and some other generous hearted personages whose liberal donations brought to the samajam what it is today.

The samajam felt the need of permanent building of its own where the unfortunate poor could be conveniently fed ; and through the invaluable exertions of that well known solicitor, the Late Mr.Ready Branson, this want had been happily fulfilled by the generosity of the Late Rao bahadur lodd Krishnadas Balamukundas Garu, a great sowcar and millionaire of madras, who made a gift to the samajam of its present building, and to whom, therefore, the institution owes an everlasting debt of gratitude and it has opened on the 18th December 1895 by his excellency Lord Wenlock g.c.i.e., the then Governor of Madras.
